An individual laying down for an acupuncture treatment in Chatham NY, part of a complete guide for first-timers in the Hudson Valley, serving Columbia County and Berkshire County and the surrounding Hudson Valley area

If you've been searching for acupuncture in the Hudson Valley, you're not alone.  More and more, people in our region are turning to acupuncture and Chinese medicine for relief from pain, stress, and a wide range of health concerns.  Whether you're completely new to acupuncture or just looking for a trusted provider, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know.

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a core practice of Chinese medicine that has been used for over 3,000 years.  It involves the gentle insertion of very thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body (acupuncture points) along pathways known as meridians or channels.  According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), these meridians carry qi throughout the body.  Some refer to qi as the body's vital energy, some say there is no way to describe it.  It is the thing that moves our body and processes within it.  When qi becomes blocked or imbalanced, illness, pain, stress and other imbalances can follow.  Acupuncture works to restore the natural homeostasis within the body.

From a modern, biomedical perspective, research suggests that acupuncture stimulates the nervous system, activating your parasympathetic nervous system ("rest + digest" - the opposite of "fight or flight"), promotes circulation of blood and lymph, reduces inflammation, and triggers the release of endorphins (the body's natural painkillers).  This dual understanding of ancient medicine, supported by modern science, is one reason Hudson Valley acupuncture practices are seeing a growing demand.

What Conditions Does Acupuncture Treat?

My acupuncture patients in Chatham come in for a wide range of reasons.  The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes acupuncture as an effective treatment for dozens of conditions, including, but not limited to:

  • Chronic + acute pain: back pain, neck pain, headaches, migraines, joint pain
  • Mental + emotional health: anxiety, depression, stress, insomnia
  • Women's health: menstrual irregularities, PMS, fertility support, menopause symptoms
  • Digestive issues: bloating, nausea, IBS
  • Respiratory conditions: seasonal allergies, sinusitis, asthma support
  • Fatigue + immune support

Whatever has brought you to look for acupuncture, there's a good chance we can help.

What to Expect at Your First Acupuncture Appointment

Your first visit begins with a thorough intake where we ask about your main concerns, your overall health history, sleep, digestion, emotional wellbeing and lifestyle.  We look at the whole person and how the entire body is working, or not working, together.  We don't look at just the individual symptom.

Treatment typically involves lying comfortably on the table while ultra-fine needles are placed at carefully selected points.  Most patients feel little to no discomfort.  Many patients describe a mild tingling or a deep, heaviness.  Sessions last 45-60 minutes and many people feel noticeably relaxed or even fall asleep during treatment.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

This is one of the most common questions we hear from our patients in the practice.  The answer varies depending on the condition and how long it's been present.  Generally speaking:

  • Acute issues (recent injury, sudden illness): 2x/week until symptoms subside.  Then tapering off to 1x/week, etc., etc.
  • Chronic conditions (ongoing pain, long-term anxiety, fertility): Usually about 8-12+ session, 1x/week until symptoms have shifted in a meaninful way and tapering to monthly maintenance.
  • Non-specific conditions: acupuncture is cumulative and a wonderful preventative medicine.  Regular acupuncture, even if it's monthly for general health support is encouraged and recommended to get the full benefits of acupuncture and Chinese medicine.
