Peaceful forest path surrounded by golden autumn leaves representing seasonal balance and nature’s transition at The Jade Center in Chatham NY

In Chinese medicine, autumn is associated with the Metal element, which governs the Lungs and Large Intestine.  The Lung and Large Intestine are the organs of taking in (the air we breathe) and release.  Autumn is a time of turning inward to release and let go of what no longer serves us, and prepares us for winter's stillness and internal energy (the most Yin time of year).

When we resist this natural rhythm, symptoms can arise physically and emotionally.  We can experience tightness in the chest, dry throat and/or skin, fatigue, a sense of grief or melancholy that seems to float around with the cold air.  As if we are mourning all that the energy of summer allowed us to forget or circumvent with it's Yang and busy energy.

Acupuncture helps our body and emotions adjust with the shift in season, bringing us back to a point of relative homeostasis.

Common patterns we see arise due to the shifts of Autumn are those such as (but not limited to):

  • more respiratory issues (colds, sinus pressure or congestion, dryness in the nose, throat, chest, lung or skin)
  • Constipation or sluggish digestion
  • Fatigue or emotional heaviness

These are all signs that the Lung and Large intestine, or our Metal element, need support.

How Can Acupuncture Help?

Acupuncture encourages smooth circulation of Qi, Blood, Yin, Yang, and Fluids throughout the body.  By strengthening the Lungs and supporting the immune system and keeping things moving, it helps the body adapt to the colder, drier air.

Regular treatments can also calm the nervous system, grounding the mind and helping release stuck emotions.  As the days get shorter, it gets darker earlier and routines change, it can tax our nervous systems in obvious and subtle ways.  When the Metal element is balanced, we feel clear, organized, resilient and able to release what we no longer need.

Seasonal Tips for Maintaining Balance in Autumn

  • Eat warm, cooked foods: consider more soups, stews, root veggies, pears for moisture and naturally white colored foods.
  • Breathwork: remember to breathe deeply, take morning walks if you're able and breathe in the crisp, fresh autumn air in big breaths to strengthen your Lung Qi.  Consider singing and humming to strengthen Lung Qi.
  • Stay hydrated: dryness is the climate associated with Autumn and the Metal element.  It's the enemy of the Lung and Large Intestine.  Think about it!  Dryness in our bowels and dryness in our lungs keep things stuck.  Our breath, our mucus, our excrement.  Hydration is movement and an easy way to keep dryness at bay.  Opt for warm water and beverages.
  • Rest more:  If you ever needed an excuse to cancel plans and stay in and get cozy, this is your permission to do so.  Nature is slowing way down and so should we.

Acupuncture during any time of year helps you stay grounded and in tune with your body's needs.  Whether you're managing stress, boosting immunity or preparing for colder months by just feeling snuggly on the table with the table warmer on, each treatment helps your body stay in tune with the seasons and in tune with your own personal needs.
